ニューヨークから一足早い鈴の音が到着。この冬、クリスマスシーズンを眩く彩る歌姫リア・ミシェル（Lea Michele）のホリデー・アルバム『Christmas in The City』（ダウンロード版）が現地時間10月25日、Sony Music Masterworksよりリリースされた。8歳の頃から舞台に立ったブロードウェイと音楽への愛、そして生まれ育ったニューヨーク・シティでのクリスマスの思い出が詰まった『Christmas In The City』には、時代を超えて歌い継がれるクリスマスのスタンダード・ナンバー10曲に、1曲のオリジナル新曲が収録。国内盤『クリスマス・イン・ザ・シティ』（ソニー・ミュージックジャパンインターナショナル）にはボーナス・トラック「ホワイト・クリスマス」（ソロバージョン）を追加。聖夜に響く歓びと祝福、活気に満ちた美しい『Christmas in The City』は、彼女にとって特別な思いが込められたアルバムになっているという。
「クリスマス・アルバムを作ることは、ずっと私の夢だったわ」（”It was always my dream to make a Christmas record” – People）と33歳。レイチェル・ベリー（Rachel Berry）役を演じた米FOX人気ミュージカル・ドラマ『glee/グリー』では、3つのクリスマス・エピソードに3枚のクリスマス・アルバムをリリース。数多くのクリスマス・ソングを歌ってきた彼女だが、自身のクリスマス・アルバムとしては今回が初めて。「クリスマスは大好きなホリデー、家族とのとても特別な時間だわ。クリスマスになると実家に戻り、ニューヨーク・シティでクリスマスを過ごしている。だからクリスマスといったら、私はその街を思い浮かべるわ」（”Christmas is my favorite holiday and it has always been such a special time with my family. I always go back home and spend Christmas in New York, so when I think of the holidays I think of the city.” – Press Release）。その思いは新曲にも描かれ、クリスマスと故郷の関係は、アルバムの核となりそのタイトルになっている。「このアルバムは、私の故郷の魔法とスピリットを心から祝福する曲集。私が聴いて育ったクリスマス・ソングを分かち合うことにすごくワクワクしてる。聴いてくれる人にこのクリスマス・シーズン、たくさんの歓びを届けられたらと願っているわ！」（”This album is really a celebration of that magic and spirit of my hometown. 「このアルバムで私が選んだ歌は全て、私の大好きなクリスマス・ソングよ。私がクリスマスでいつも聞いている歌。絶対外せないのが”Silver Bells”ね。”Silver Bells”は大好き、その歌詞が大好きだからだわ、”街にクリスマスがやってきた”ってね。それはまさにこのアルバムの出発点になったわ。ニューヨークで育ったからだわ、一年のなかで本当に美しいシーズンよ」（”Every single song that I picked on this record, these are my most favorite Christmas songs. These are the songs that I always listen to on Christmas. The first song that I said, ‘This has to be on my record’ was ‘Silver Bells.’ ‘Silver Bells’ was my favorite Christmas song, because I love the lyrics, ‘It’s Christmas time in the city.’ That really became the jumping off point for this album, Christmas in The City, because I grew up in New York, and it’s such a beautiful time of year.”）。
クリスマス・キャロル「It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year」(’63)から始まる『Christmas In The City』には、「Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas」(’44)、「Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree」(’58)、「Silent Night」（きよしこの夜）、「O Holy Night」（さやかに星はきらめき）などクラシカルなクリスマス・ソングに加え、ディズニー・アニメ映画『アナと雪の女王』（原題：Frozen、2013年）の「Do You Want to Build a Snowman?」（雪だるまつくろう）のカバーを収録。心躍る華やかな曲、ハートウォーミングな曲、そして教会に響く荘厳な曲まで多種多様な全11曲集。『glee/グリー』時代と重ならないようにしたというものの、『glee/グリー』で歌った「O Holy Night」はアルバムに収録。「どうすればgleeの時より良くできるか」、最も困難だったと語る挑戦のなかで、『glee/グリー』時代から成長した歌声と姿が込められた一曲になっているといい、「こんなこと口にするとは思ってなかったけど、gleeのバージョンよりもすごく誇らしく思っているわ」（” I never thought I’d say this but I think I’m even more proud of this version than the original.”）とリア・ミシェル。同曲は圧巻の「Angels We Have Heard on High」（荒野の果てに）に続くクロージング・トラックになっており、聖歌隊をバック・コーラスに圧倒的歌声を響かせる壮麗なフィナーレが全身鳥肌の深い感動を誘う。
また今回『glee/グリー』の大親友ジョナサン・グロフ（Jonathan Groff）とダレン・クリス（Darren Criss）がゲスト参加。「ジョナサンは世界で一番の親友、アルバムで一緒に歌ったのは”I’ll Be Home for Christmas”（クリスマスを我が家で）。私たちはもう10年以上一緒に歌ってきたわ」、「NYのクリスマス・チャリティでよく歌ったものだった、だから私たちにとって特別な思い出がある歌よ」（”Jonathan is my best friend in the entire world, and the song we’re singing on the record, ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas,’ we’ve been singing together for over 10 years. We would often have to do Christmas benefits and stuff like that in New York so that song in particular has very special meaning to us.”）。リア・ミシェルは今年3月、アパレルブランドAYRのファウンダーZandy Reichと結婚。結婚式ではジョナサンが彼女のベストマンを務め、ダレンらglee時代のスターが集まった。クリスマス・アルバムにはブロードウェイ・スター、シンシア・エリヴォ（Cynthia Erivo）もゲスト参加しており、「ダレン、ジョナサンそしてシンシア。彼らは皆ブロードウェイ俳優よ。このアルバムでブロードウェイのサウンドは私にとってとても大切なものだったわ。だってニューヨークっていったらブロードウェイ、私の歴史だわ」（”Darren, Jonathan and Cynthia — are all Broadway performers, and it was also really important to me that the sound of this record had that Broadway feeling. Because again, it’s New York, it’s Broadway, it’s my history.”）。
同アルバムの音楽プロデューサーには、『glee』の音楽プロデューサーAdam AndersとPeer Astromを迎え、オリジナルの新曲「Christmas in New York」は、再会した彼らとともにリア・ミシェルが書き上げた。「心からラブレターとして私が書いた曲よ。アルバムのアンセムだわ」、「この美しいニューヨークを描いた曲で、同時に家族・友人と過ごす意味、クリスマスのスピリットをまさに歌った曲よ」（”I wrote this song as my real love letter. It’s the anthem of the album, and it just highlights all of the special things New York has to offer. It paints this beautiful picture of New York, but it also is really about what it means to be with your family and friends and engaged in that holiday spirit.”）。『Christmas In The City』では、ブロードウェイの舞台とサウンド、子供の頃のクリスマスの思い出に加え、懐かしい『glee』のポップ・サウンドも蘇らせているという。Adam Andersらとのアルバム制作に「このアルバムのために私たちが再会することはとても大切なことだったわ。gleeのあのサウンドを呼び戻したかったからだわ、gleeで生まれたあのとても活気に満ち、明るく、そしてパワフルなサウンドを」（”It was very important to me that we reunited for this record. I wanted to bring back that sound from Glee — that very vibrant and bright and powerful sound that we created.”）。そうした挑戦と原点回帰で作られたサード・アルバムにある一つの願い。
