再来月に授与式が行われるアメリカ音楽界の最も権威あるアワード『第61回グラミー賞』（The 61st Grammy Award）の全84部門ノミネーションが発表、グラミー賞2018を受けジェンダー・バランスの配慮を伺わせるものとなり、ヒップホップの男性アーティストらの勢いの中、各ジャンルの女性アーティストらも数多くノミネートされた（現地時間12月7日）。今回最多ノミネートとなったのは、ケンドリック・ラマー（Kendrick Lamar）で、映画『ブラックパンサー』（原題：Black Panther）のサントラ『Black Panther: The Album』が「年間アルバム賞」（Album of the Year）、そのリード・シングル「All The Stars」が「年間レコード賞」（Record Of The Year）及び「年間ソング賞」（Song Of The Year）でノミネートされるなど、3つの主要部門含む最多8部門でノミネートされた。
続いてドレイク（Drake）が「God’s Plan」で「年間レコード賞」及び「年間ソング賞」、『Scorpion』で「年間アルバム賞」にノミネートされるなど、3つの主要部門含む7部門でノミネート。そしてフォーク・ロックのブランディ カーライル（Brandi Carlile）が「The Joke」で「年間レコード賞」、『By The Way, I Forgive You』で「年間アルバム賞」でノミネートされ、「The Story」の37歳が女性アーティストとしては最多6部門のノミネートとなり今回サプライズの一つとして注目を集める。続いて5部門のノミネーションとなったのは、「This is America」で「年間レコード賞」及び「年間ソング賞」でノミネートされたチャイルディッシュ・ガンビーノ（Childish Gambino）。またカーディ・B（Cardi B）、レディー・ガガ（Lady Gaga）、ハー（H.E.R.）、マレン・モリス（Maren Morris）ら女性アーティストが5部門ノミネーションとなった。カーディ・Bは「I Like It」で「年間レコード賞」、『Invasion Of Privacy』で「年間アルバム賞」、レディー・ガガは『アリー/ スター誕生』（原題：A Star Is Born）の主題歌「Shallow」で「年間レコード賞」及び「年間ソング賞」、ハーは「新人賞」と『H.E.R.』で「年間アルバム賞」、マレン・モリスは「The Middle」で「年間レコード賞」及び「年間ソング賞」でそれぞれ主要部門のノミネーションを果たしている。
一方今回”冷遇”として海外メディアで取り上げられているのはテイラー・スウィフト（Taylor Swift）で主要部門のノミネーションは一つもなく、『Reputation』で「ポップ・ヴォーカル・アルバム賞」（Pop Vocal Album）の1部門ノミネートにとどまった。またそのドラマの一人、カニエ・ウェスト（Kanye West）も「年間プロデューサー賞」（Producer of the Year, Non-Classical）で1部門のみ。カミラ・カベロ（Camila Cabello）も主要部門のノミネートはなくポップのカテゴリー2部門のノミネーションとなった。またビヨンセ（Beyoncé）とジェイ・Z（Jay-Z）のザ・カーターズ（The Carters）は3部門ノミネートとなるも主要部門のノミネーションはなかった。また『Sweetener』で全米首位を獲得するなど成功を収めたアリアナ・グランデ（Ariana Grande）は同アルバムで「ポップ・ヴォーカル・アルバム賞」（Best Pop Vocal Album）、その「God Is a Woman」で「ポップ・ソロ・パフォーマンス賞」（Best Pop Solo Performance）の2部門のみのノミネーションとなった。今年6月に銃撃され死亡したXXXTentacionは今年注目されたラッパーの一人だったがノミネーションはなかった。
今回『第61回グラミー賞』のキーワードともなっている「Diversity & Inclusion」（多様性とインクルーシブ）。「Time’s Up」と「#MeToo」ムーブメントのなか迎えたグラミー賞2018では、男性アーティストがノミネーションを占めただけではなく受賞の大部分を占め、「#GrammysSoMale」（グラミーは男ばっかり）がトレンドとなった。またその受賞結果を受け、レコーディング・アカデミー社長兼CEOのNeil Portnowが女性アーティストらに「ステップアップ」すべきと発言したことがさらに大きな波紋を呼んだ。また昨年からアメリカ音楽界でヒップホップが史上初めて年次報告でシェアトップとなりグラミー賞2018でもヒップホップが多数ノミネーションとなったが、主要部門での無冠などメインストリームの動向と齟齬するシーンもみられた。
こうしたことから、「ダイバーシティ」（多様性）と「インクルーシブ」（多様性の積極的受け入れ）の実現のためオバマ大統領政権時ミシェル・オバマ夫人を支えていた弁護士ティナ・チェン（Tina Tchen）を代表とする「Diversity & Inclusion」特別委員会を今年から設置。レコーディング・アカデミーの投票メンバーに、今回新たに同メンバーの資格を有する900人が招かれ、その全ての人が、女性か、あるいは有色人種か、あるいは39歳以下の人々で構成、『第61回グラミー賞』からその投票に加わっている。さらに『第61回グラミー賞』では、これまでと異なり主要部門（年間レコード賞、年間アルバム賞、年間ソング賞、新人賞）のノミネーション数を従来の5から8へと拡大し、多様性に富むノミネーションとなるよう機会を拡大させた。なおNeil Portnowは任期満了に伴いその地位から退く方針であることが報じられている。今回のノミネーション選考委員会（Nominations Review Committees）では、51％が女性、48％が有色人種となり、前回の女性28％、有色人種37％から大幅にその割合が増えたという（Billboard）。そうした新たな試みから選出された『第61回グラミー賞』の主なノミネーション・リストは以下の通り（※全84部門リストはこちら）。女性アーティストらの受賞は果たして、『第61回グラミー賞』授与式は、現地時間2019年2月10日ロサンゼルスのステイプルズ・センターで開催され、同模様はCBSでライブ放送される。なおグラミー賞2018では、ブルーノ・マーズ（Bruno Mars）が最多6部門受賞、ケンドリック・ラマーが次いで5部門の受賞を果たしている。

※『第61回グラミー賞』の対象となるのは、2017年10月1日から2018年9月30日までに米国内でリリースされた音楽及びミュージック・ビデオで、主催のレコーディング・アカデミー（the Recording Academy）によると、全84部門にわたり21,000を超える申請があったという。ノミネーションはミュージシャン、プロデューサー、レコーディング・エンジニアなど音楽のプロフェッショナルらからなるレコーディング・アカデミー会員、そしてレコード会社から申請を受けたものをエキスパートがジャンル別に分け（Screening）、その後レコーディング・アカデミーの投票メンバーによってノミネーション（Nomination）が決定。その際投票メンバーは主要4部門に加えて、各々専門の分野のカテゴリに投票するという。受賞を決める最終的な投票（Final Voting）もレコーディング・アカデミーの投票メンバーが行う。
